The Nekomata Yokai is best recognized by it's two tails. According to Japanese folklore, Nekomata start out as regular domestic house cats who become yokai as they grow older. Their tail splits into two and they gain supernatural abilities, including the ability to walk upright on it's hind legs, control of fire, and control of the dead.
Like many yokai, the Nekomata can be benevolent, or malevolent towards humans. They can be helpful and a source of wisdom, in fact they are considered symbols of good luck and longevity. However they also can curse humans, such as some legends of Nekomata taking revenge on cruel owners through the use of necromancy.
